Are you working from a noisy, busy home with kids and pets all demanding your attention?
Five years ago, I was trying to work as a freelance writer, with demanding clients, and two busy toddlers.
Instant chaos.
I was destroying my attention span.
Then I learned 5 tricks which helped me manage my home and work life, and saved my sanity.
- I helped my kids understand when they couldn’t disturb me. When I wore my special red hat with the words on it, they knew they should only talk to mommy when it was an emergency.
- Build calm time gaps into your day, otherwise it’s not going to happen. I wake up 15 minutes before everyone to enjoy my first coffee of the day in peace and quiet.
- You can also take calm pauses between finishing a task and starting the next one, even if it only means taking a few deep breaths.
- Create a space for your kids where they can draw, paint or play quiet games, while you work. This makes them feel like they’re doing something important, and they’re more likely to cooperate.
- Your house doesn’t need to be spotless, and you don’t have to be one of those perfect moms you see on Instagram. Your work can be “good enough”. Stop yourself if you start thinking like a perfectionist.
The chaos isn’t going anywhere: your kids will still be loud, deadlines will still loom, and life will still be messy. You can’t eliminate the noise, but you can find your center within it.
