The Career Advice I’m Not Giving My Kids

Three years ago, I left my full-time job to look after my kids.

I launched into tutoring and freelance writing.

I was busy all the time, for 18 months.

Then AI hit, and opportunities decreased.

My regular client cut their budget by 70%. Another switched to ChatGPT entirely. Within three months, my income dropped in half.

I decided to create an online business. Not only to earn money, but also to inspire my children.

The world they’re growing up in looks nothing like the one I prepared for.

There’s no more get a degree, a good job, and then climb the corporate ladder.

The rules have changed.

I decided to start a business to show them what’s possible. You don’t need permission, you can start building something yourself.

The World Of Work Is Melting

The world of work is being rewritten in real-time.

Big companies have vanished. Meanwhile, youngsters are building million-dollar businesses from their bedrooms.

I’m figuring it out in real-time, as I build projects.

I completed courses as I built a website and social media presence.

I haven’t achieved financial success yet, but I’ll keep going.

University Might Not Be Worth It

A degree used to be the “safe” option.

I needed one to get a job as a writer.

Now, it’s just expensive.

Crushing debt, and outdated knowledge isn’t something I want for my children.

Writing? Marketing? Design? Coding? Sales?

Now, you can learn most high-value skills online. For free. Or for a fraction of the cost.

Some careers still need formal credentials. Doctors, or engineers.

But the world rewards results, not degrees.

I want my kids to know both paths exist.

They Need To See Me Adapt

To watch me learn new skills, make mistakes, pick myself back up, and keep building.

My 9-year-old asked me last week why I was working on a Saturday. I showed him my laptop screen; an eBook I’d written for a client. His eyes lit up. “You made that yourself?”

That moment was worth more than any paycheck.

You’re not at the mercy of the changing world. You can shape it.

You don’t wait for someone to save you.

You create your own opportunities.

Failure isn’t fatal.

It’s feedback.

Every mistake is a lesson. Every setback is data.

That’s the mindset that wins in an uncertain world.

Adaptability. Curiosity. The courage to bet on yourself.

The best inheritance I can give my kids isn’t money, but the right mindset to create their own.

They’ll understand that education comes in many forms.

That technology is a tool, not a threat.

That the greatest security doesn’t come from a job, but from the ability to create value.
